Jack Lasenby has writing for young people utterly sussed. Aunt Effie was the most ridiculous, smirk-inducing read I have ever engaged upon. Marvellous storytelling, and if you are a New Zealander, all the more marvellous as Lasenby takes veiled pot-shots at many national habits and institutions. If you are not a New Zealander, read Aunt Effie, and you soon will be. Definitely a childrens book (9-13 years), but oh so elegantly entertaining if youre an adult who enjoys a mind-wobble from time to time. Lasenbys sense of the ridiculous, balanced by a keen eye which manages to convey instructive learning (in this case about kauri timber felling and the building and sailing of a decked scow), make for entertainment of the best kind.Eloquent, witty, and totally mad.

Highly recommended.
