What time I wasnt playing in the trees and listening to ghost stories, I was aggravating Mama by trying to help her pedal the sewing machine. Any kind of mechanical apparatus appealed to me very much. The sewing machine had three drawers on each side of where the operator sat.

I was forever pulling the drawers out to see what I could find... Welcome to Texas. The roaring twenties are coming to an end, and Maloy Herbert is a young boy living in a world that many of us cannot begin to imagine. The Great Depression is about to hit, and a poor family is struggling to feed hungry mouths. Few can recall the 1920s and 1930s with vivid clarity.

Maloy Herbert has been blessed with an acute memory and shares his fascinating childhood stories of mischief, sadness, and survival. Follow Maloys delightful memories from the early 1920s all the way into the next century as he takes us back to a time where Model-Ts ruled the roads and air conditioning didnt exist in A Wickless Candle. Maloy Herbert overcame great odds while dropping out of school after the fifth grade in order to help his family make a living during the Great Depression.

As World War II intensified, Maloys conscience prompted him to enlist in the army and spent three years in combat in the South Pacific. While desperate times demanded his being self-taught, he vowed not to relax his efforts to pursue a better education as he worked diligently and obtained a flight instructors license. He enjoys writing poetry and gospel songs.

From the cedar groves and cotton fields, Maloy Herbert became the man of his dreams. He is retired and currently lives in Central Texas with his wife.
